“Breton” a 13-foot-3 shark that weighs in at nearly 1,500 pounds, was recently tracked by Ocearch to the Outer Banks, not far from the southern Virginia coast, where he has been known to frequent.
Ocearch - which described itself as a “global non-profit organization conducting unprecedented research on our ocean’s giants in order to help scientists collect previously unattainable data in the ocean - has been tracking Breton since September 2020.
The shark was first tagged in Nova Scotia, and has since been tracked making its way up and down the coast, as far south as The Bahamas, including several stop near the shores of the DMV region along the way.
“This mature male white shark is joined by many of our juvenile sharks who have spent the last few weeks in the same region,” Ocearch posted on social media.
“Many of our animals use the productive continental shelf waters around the (area) as a spring staging area before making their migration north for their summer residency.”
